About the role - exclusive to Appreciating Payroll:Step into a pivotal leadership role as Assistant Payroll Manager with an Australian business with over a century of success in Australia and New Zealand.
In this newly created role, you’ll take ownership of end-to-end payroll for a workforce of circa 3,500 employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery in a fast-paced, decentralised environment. Working closely with senior leaders across the business, you’ll play a key role in supporting operations, driving payroll excellence, and contributing to a high-performing, low-bureaucracy culture.
Leading a team of experienced payroll professionals and reporting into the Head of Payroll, you’ll oversee daily operations, compliance with awards and legislation, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency and accuracy. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll coach and develop your team, partner with stakeholders, and identify smarter ways of working—all while ensuring every employee is paid correctly and on time. About you: - Proven experience (5+ years) leading payroll operations in a medium to large organisation (minimum 5 reports), with strong end-to-end payroll knowledge
- Solid understanding of Australian payroll legislation, awards, and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated leadership capability, including managing, coaching, and developing payroll teams
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and a commitment to accuracy and quality assurance
- Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to partner with senior leaders
- Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a drive for continuous improvement and process efficiency
- Technical proficiency in payroll systems and strong Excel skills
The offer: Depending on your previous levels of experience, a base salary between $140,000 - $160,000 + Super + bonus scheme is on offer to the successful candidate.
